Personnel of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. XIII supported the 2015 Division Science Quest, Fair, Quiz, Yes-O and Training Camp on September 30 to October 4, 2015 at the Surigao del Norte National High School in Surigao City.

With the theme “Quality Science Education: A Key to Developing Resilient Schools and Communities,” the event started with a program at the Provincial Convention Center where Mr. Romeo M. Dalodado, MGB ROXIII Geosciences Division Chief, delivered a message which pulsated with wisdom, inspiration and vitality.

In his message, Mr. Dalodado stated that one of the major mandates of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau is the assessment of geologic hazards, specifically landslides and floods, which will result in the production of geohazard susceptibility maps for the efficient disaster risk reduction management of communities. In the same way, he stated that the Bureau is also responsible for the translation of the technical information in a form that will be more easily understood by the general public.

Mr. Dalodado emphasized that the Bureau highly recognizes the vital role of educators in disseminating information from the practitioners to the youth in more innovative ways and guiding the future generations to adopt a responsible stance on matters concerning the safety and welfare of the people and the environment.  “May each and every one celebrate this year’s event in a spirit of cooperation and healthy competition.  We know for a fact that your preparations started with your capacity and ingenuity.  You represent your schools with the hope of bringing back home the fame and honor as winners. Nevertheless, everyone in this crowd is a winner!  You are the crème de la crème, whom we look forward to as our successors and forever be the stewards of Mother Earth,” Mr. Dalodado said.

The MGB ROXIII personnel served as judges in the Extemporaneous Speaking, Essay Writing, PowerPoint Presentation, and On-the-Spot Art Competitions which were simultaneously held on October 2. They also prepared the test papers and facilitated the Science Quiz for Grade Levels 3 to 12.  One of the featured competitions in the fair was the Yes-O exhibits prepared by Yes-Os of various secondary schools.  The exhibits showcased the schools’ environmental projects and accomplishments in relation to natural disaster preparedness and other green initiatives.

The Department of Education (DepED), in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), established the Youth for Environment in Schools Organization (Yes-O) on September 1, 2003.  As the only recognized co-curricular environmental club or organization in the schools, it consolidates all other environmental and/or ecology clubs or organizations in school. The Yes-O is a significant venue for students’ actions, movements and advocacies toward safeguarding and conserving the environment for future generations.
