The representatives of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. XIII bagged awards at the 30th National Statistics Month (NSM) Celebration of the Philippine Statistics Authority and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources on October 9 and 11, 2019 in Butuan City. With the theme Data Innovation: Key to a Better Nation, the Opening Program of this year’s celebration was held on October 9, 2019 at the South Atrium of Robinsons Place. The program laid emphasis on the importance of the Census of Population and Housing in the Changing Data Landscape. Presentations on the basic concepts of the census of population and housing, the uses and importance of the census, and the results of the PopCen 2015 were given. The highlights of the program included competitions on Best Display of Statistical Practices Using Infographics and Stats and Ladders. Karst subsidence and sinkhole collapse are some of the most dangerous hazards that can happen in an area underlain by carbonate lithology. The term karst describes a distinctive topography that indicates dissolution (also called chemical solution) of underlying soluble rocks by surface water or ground water. Although commonly associated with carbonate rocks (limestone and dolomite) other highly soluble rocks such as evaporites (gypsum and rock salt) can be sculpted into karst terrain (Alpha, T.R., et.al). The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. XIII conducted the Karst Subsidence Hazard Susceptibility Assessment and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Survey on June 16 to August 13 in the Municipality of Tagbina, Surigao del Sur as its sole target for 2019. A team of geologists and geologic aides from the Geosciences Division conducted the said assessment and survey.
